Literary Trips

On Saturday, June 9, 2012, the Friends of SCPL will sponsor a bus trip to Amherst, Massachusetts to visit the home of Emily Dickinson www.emilydickinsonmuseum.org  and the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art www.carlemuseum.org.  Lunch will be at the historic Lord Jeffery Inn www.lordjefferyinn.com  built in 1926 on the Amherst Commons.

Our visit will begin with a guided tour of the Dickinson Homestead where you will learn the history of the house and where Dickinson wrote her 1,775 poems.  The tour will continue next door to The Evergreens, home of Austin and Sue Dickinson, brother and sister-in-law of the poet.  There will be opportunity to visit the gardens and Emily’s gravesite as well.

The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art was founded by renowned author and illustrator Eric Carle and his wife Barbara.  Carle illustrated more than 70 books, including the 1969 classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The mission of this museum is to inspire an appreciation for and understanding of picture book art.  The museum houses three galleries dedicated to rotating exhibitions of picture book art from around the world.  As an added bonus, the museum will be celebrating its tenth anniversary on the day of our visit.

The bus will depart promptly at 7:00 a.m. from Bed, Bath, and Beyond, Mohawk Commons and return by 6:30 p.m.  The trip costs $70 for Friends members and $80 for nonmembers and includes the bus, gratuities, admission fees and tours, and lunch.  Registration will begin January 9.  CLICK HERE FOR REGISTRATION FORM  or visit the main branch of the library or the Whitney Book Corner.
